Thermography as a predictive maintenance tool is gaining increasing acceptance for use in ships engine rooms
Thermography can be used for the preventative maintenance of electrical systems by detecting overheating connections before they fail or potentially result in fireThermography can also be used to survey lagging and insulation on steam pipes and exhaust sytems. Defective lagging is a potential source of fire in the event of a spray release of diesel fuel or hydraulic oil. Some 15 - 20 engine room fires are reported to DNV every year, out of a fleet of about 4.500 vessels. Approximately 60 % of these fires are caused by oil leakage hitting a hot surface.
Engines can be surveyed for abnormal heating of components and motors for overheating windings or bearings.
